Eating slow and learning to listen to your body to tell you you are full is hard. Overall, I'm still doing better than I used to be before starting this, but this past weekend or so i've been slipping back into bad habits. Going to rewatch the first episode to try to regain some of that info and feeling. Then I'll catch up on the one that was on this past Sunday (I'll skip episode 2 as the tapping doesn't seem to do anything for me personally, and I can't bring myself to do that in public... LOL).

Hey Zack! Good luck to you and I wish you all the best. I'm 44 now, and I trace (blame?) a lot of my weight problems on the many years I worked at McDonalds. With the short breaks, I learned to eat a ton fast. I know a lot of that is just me, but I do think some of my habits directly came from that place (but with that said, back then McDonalds was a great place to work for a teen, so I wouldn't do it again if I was back then and know what I know now).

Anyway, this forum is for the Traineo Group "I Can Make You Thin" which is for people following the McKenna program (which is more a way of learning how to eat than a "diet" program IMO). You may want to check out some of the more traditional Traineo forums

Question.....when your eating yogurt......how do you keep the yogurt in your mouth while your chewing 20 times? My friend asked me this and I had to laugh outloud.

Hope you didn't have yogurt in your mouth when they asked this... Yogurt through the nose is painful (yeah, its happened to me... ).

I had Yogurt once or twice in the past week. There is no "chewing" per se really involved so for me its the act of just putting down the spoon between bites and just enjoying it (instead of my normal method of eating yogurt which was huge spoonfuls and as fast as I could. then look for something else to eat as I was still hungry...).
I suck!

If you are a salt aholic, you can help (a little) with the sodium intake by switching to Sea Salt instead of table salt. Various sea salts are considered "Low Sodium" and some claim to be over 50% less sodium than regular table salt. So if you are retaining water, and you are a salt lover, this may help things some.

As I've stated in another post, I have a different mindset about this system. For me, this is NOT a weight loss program. Its a method to relearn (or learn for the first time) how to properly eat. A side benefit of this is that it should bring weight loss, but for me, I'm looking for the freedom and relief I'm finding and getting from being in control, and not having food control me. I know that by accomplishing this, weight loss will come. I'll find it fantastic if I reach my goal weight with this method alone, but again, I just want control of my eating for now. I know that once I have that control, then if I need to add in other forms of weight loss then it will be so much easier than in the past.

Stay positive, and stick with it. This is so simple and it just makes so much sense (at least to me it does).
How's it going?

As I put on my profile, I felt like I sort of lost control at Easter Dinner yesterday. Got caught up with the discussions at the table and all,and next thing I knew I was on my second fairly decent sized plate of food . But the good news is, I only really had two meals yesterday and I never felt like I was starving myself. So I still need to work on control when in an interactive meal setting, but I have to say overall it was good.

And the really good news is, I did my official one week weigh in and I'm down 4.6 pounds!!!
What are your thoughts on emotional eating show?

Thanks for the emofree link, I'll check this out. The tapping technique does work (or I should say, I've seen it work). My son had some anxiety issues that a doctor taught him to do a very similar method and it really helped him out. I never thought about using something similar to that for emotional eating. With taxes and some bills coming due, I'm probably going to be tapping a lot the next couple of weeks

For me, I really liked the show. The guy from England really hit home with me and hearing that he lost 185 pounds in like 13 months gives me SO much hope. All the questions he said he had have went through my head also.

I watched the show really late last night, so I'll probably watch it again later this week to reinforce it. I have my TiVo set not to remove these programs and will probably spool them off to DVD so I can keep them and refer back to them when I want / need them.

Hey Cathie! Sounds like you have a great start already. Yeah, learning to know when you are full is hard. I know in the past I never listened to what my body was telling me. Just had to shove the food in my face as fast as I could and as much as I could, so I never heard that before. I always thought that being full was something you experienced after the meal, and usually it was an uncomfortable bloated feeling for me.

If you are hungry 1.5 hours later, that may not be a bad thing. For some people I think they are going to find they are going to be grazers... Just small mini meals every few hours (I have a friend that claims she is part hobbit as she has 6 to 8 "meals" a day. Granted those are very small at each, but it seems like she is eating every couple of hours. She's VERY thin and always has been.)

I'll send you a contact invitation. Glad you found the group and welcome! Traineo is an awesome support tool. There are tons of forums and resources.

Check out the Fat2Fit group here on Traineo also. They have an excellent podcast with great info (I found them a few months ago when I actually was actually starting to thing a Gastric Bypass might be my only way out, but that was always a last resort for me. They have a podcast interview with a guy that had a Gastric Bypass and its very interesting to listen too). Anyway they talk about the Couch to 5K program and I've got it bookmarked (its the Cool Running website version of this, so I hadn't seen this specific one). This is definetly going to be a goal of mine (my ultimate goal is I want to be able to hike to the top of Pikes Peak before I turn 50. I'm 44 right now, so I'm giving myself plenty of time to get this weight off and get in condition to do this). I'll check out the Podcasts on this site though. That sounds great!

Yeah, I know how hard the truth hurts, and how hard it is to face those numbers. Heck, look at my weight! Up until about a month ago I refused to get on scales for a LONG time, and actually convinced myself that my weight wasn't really changing much as I felt and looked the same. But when my Doctor's office couldn't even weigh me a month or so ago, I knew it was time to face the music, make it real, and then do something with the feelings that came from seeing my real weight in real numbers. So I went out and picked up a scale from WalMart that was rated for up to 400 pounds (I knew I wasn't there yet) and weighed myself. It wasn't pretty, and I hated seeing the numbers it showed, but it has now given me a weight I never want to see again, and the motivation to lose this.

Also, if you don't weigh yourself now, how will you really know what you've accomplished in a week or so? Plus it gives you bigger bragging rights later on when you reach your goal (or as you are getting closer to your goal) to tell people how much you've lost (and that you've seen it all come off, and not just guessing at how much came off the first few weeks before you weighed).

So yes, the scale is scary, but personally for me, getting that starting weight (and I need to do measurements too soon so I have that too) is part of getting me in the mindset I needed to really work on this and stay committed to what I'm wanting to accomplish.

No pressure...

Hi Carol!

You sound like you are in the right frame of mind and really ready to go on this! Welcome to the group and spread the word about our little area hear on Traineo for others.

As for Motivators, Click on the Home tab at the very top then scroll down to where you see the Add a Motivator Now button and click it. Then choose to Find a Motivator from Traineo button and click that. Now in Search by Name box type in my name (or whoever you want to add) then click Find. You can then click on the Yellow speech bubble next to my name to do this.

Remember you can only have 4 Motivators (as I understand it) but you can have lots of contacts (you can add a contact by just clicking on the yellow thought bubble by my name here in this post and it will tell you you have to send a request to me to be a contact as you can't send to me directly yet).

I'm still learning my way around Traineo myself, so hope that makes sense and helps!

Hey all, I'm just really starting to use Traineo and am curious about a few things... I see on other active traineo members that they have contacts. How do I go about adding someone as a contact in Traineo? I don't see anything in the FAQ about it.

Also, there are people I'm now interested here and I'd like to be able to know when they update their profile. I see there is RSS, but is there a way to use that here on traineo itself (so like on my own profile) or do I need to use an rss reader? If an RSS reader, can someone tell me how they do this (I understand what RSS is, but never really used it). I do use Firefox and I know its RSS capable (somehow).

Thanks!

Hi to all the Traineo Experts out there... I'm going through various people's profiles and they all have contacts listed at the bottom. How do I go about adding people as contacts? I understand the concept of motivators, but don't see how to add contacts.

Also, is it possible to setup where I can see when people update the comments on their profile? Example, I'd like to be able to see when Lorraine E updates her comments (or do I need to use an RSS readeer for that).

Thanks for any and all help. Been looking through the FAQ and haven't found this yet. Or if there is a better place to ask this, let me know that also.

While I'm looking at this method as a new way of eating (and not a "diet"), I'm also trying to make better choices in what I'm eating. Per the system, Paul says not to deprive yourself of things you love, but I'm not taking that to mean to just eat junk too. I will admit that for where I am right now, just portion control and taking overall control of the way I eat will do wonders for me. But I also realize that as I get closer and closer to my goal, I do think that eating "healthy" (whatever that really means) will be more key to reaching my goal. But this is all just my opinion.

Stitch, keep up the work you are doing and hang in there. You are a lot further down the road than some of us!

I weigh weekly, and while he said on the show to do like monthly, I'll probably still weigh weekly out of habit. As I posted over on the mckenna.com site though, I have a very different view on this system. This isn't a Diet but just a new way of eating (with a benefit of losing weight). So while my goal is weight loss, thats just a side effect of what I hope is a lifestyle change for me. Even if I only lose 1 pound a week, I'll reach my goal in 3 years and thats a lot less time than it took for me to put all this weight on.

Losing weight is important, but my mindset isn't focused on that, but on changing my eating habits (and weight loss will be the natural result from this change). This to me is the more permenant solution (changing my eating habits and getting control of my eating). And a permenant solution is what I'm looking for myself. I'm tired of quick fixes and "instant" results that then have me putting more weight back on later because I didn't learn anything or it was a short term fad that you can't live with. I can see myself living with this method.

Just updated my comments on my main page, but wanted to share this here also. Last night we wound up going out to eat at On the Border. Good news is that I only ate half the meal (thats amazing for me and my wife even asked if I didn't feel good). Second thing was that my son (he's 13) asked me if I didn't like my food while we were eating. I told him not at all and it was great, but why was he asking. He then replied he had never seen me put my fork down before and thought I didn't like it since I appeared to be forcing my self to eat it. I told him that I was now learning to enjoy my food and not eat so fast. I'm hoping he'll start following this too eventually.

So yes, our kids see how we eat and they notice things like that!

Yes, eat whatever you want, but you have to follow all 4 rules. For fast food, remember you still have to eat it slow . So as he says, you are going to have to pry your fingers off of the sandwich and set it down after every bite and really chew and think about the food you are eating. You aren't supposed to be doing anything else (so eating while driving would be a no no) while you eat.

I've had 2 meals today and am amazed at how little I've eaten (actuallly I have concerns about that as I do know fitness stuff and your body requires a certain amount of food no matter what). But I guess if I'm truly listening to my body, I'll take enough in as I'll be hungry when it needs more. My guess is I'm going to be tending to eat smaller amounts but eat more often (as needed), which I'm perfectly fine with that.

If you go out to the McKenna.com site, you can sign up for free. Its mainly only forums, but he does have videos there of different things for his program. I haven't watched the online videos yet (I've only seen program that was on TLC last night so far). Then as mentioned there are YouTube videos too.

I just posted a new update on my page (http://mfrazzz.traineo.com/). I'm really wondering if changes can really be happening this fast. For lunch I made a turkey sandwich and had potato chips. After about 20 mins of eating I only finished about half the sandwich and less than half the portion of chips I put on my plate. I know (and keep telling myself) that if I get hungry again in a few hours, then I can finish the sandwich (or I should say have more, I should quit saying I'm going to "finish" eating). But what is really striking me is that this is only day 1, and only my second meal. But as I sit here typeing this, I can't get over how greasy the chips are and actually what a bad taste they have left in my mouth. These are Lays Potato chips and I ate them for the last few days out of this same bag. As I ate them, they tasted the same, but now all I can taste is the grease... Has eating slowly now made me more conscience of this and now I really am tasting my food (on the first day)?

On the program last night, Paul said that eat what you want, but you may find that what you want changes and things you currently like you may not like anymore. Is that what is happening, or am I just wanting to believe this already?

Just curious if anyone else has experience similar.

Welcome... what are the 4 golden rules? Thanks!

You really need to see the program and take it all in for the full impact of it (IMO) as the rules are ridiculously simple, but if you think about it, they make complete sense...

1) When you are hungry Eat

2) Eat what you want

3) Eat conscieously

4) When you are full, STOP

For me #3 is the real key... you are to eat by always putting down your utinsels (or food in the case of a sandwich) and just focus on eating. Chew your food (he suggests about 20 times per bite). So your eating will be slow, and you are to focus on what you are eating so you can enjoy it. Also by slowing down, you can now give your stomach time to tell you brain that "Hey, I'm full down here. I really don't need anymore".

For me it seemed to work with breakfast. I normally have a large bowl of cereal and will refill it a few times as I wolf it down. This morning I put the spoon down between each bite, and while I started with a large bowl, I didn't refill the bowl and I wound up throwing part of it away as I was full. I don't think I've ever done that before (not on the first bowl at least). I've been drinking water all morning (I'm a good water drinker when I decide to be) and its now been like 3 hours later and I have to say I'm just now starting to think I may be getting hungry again. So I'll go make a sandwich soon and see how that goes.

For me this just makes all the sense in the world, and fits with how I see my daughter eat (who is in good shape) and other thin people I'm around. They don't deprive themselves of food, and they eat what they want and then seem happy to be done when they are full (I'm a plate cleaner).

I highly recommend you go watch the videos on YouTube or catch a rerun of the program on TLC (or use BitTorrent to grab the show and watch it on your PC).

Do you have any plans to begin an exercise program?

Yes, I'll be doing exercise (I know the program talked about in coming weeks methods to motivate you to want to exercise which I'm hoping really helps with my lazy self ;)). If nothing else, just getting out and walking a few times a week to start out. I play golf, so when the weather cooperates I'll start walking 9 holes instead of riding in a cart too (this has helped in the past). With a goal of eventually being able to walk and play a full 18 holes.

Wow, you hit that on the head... I love spring (still not quite there here in Colorado, as we have snow today ) when I can actually start opening windows and allowing fresh air inside...

My breakfast a little while ago was my first attempt at this. Maybe its mental (of course isn't everything mental when it comes to deprogramming obsessions around food and such), but just putting down the spoon as I ate my cereal, I used my usual large bowl, and filled it how I normally do. I actually dumped part of it out and I feel just fine right now. Normally I will eat the entire bowl, and refill it one or two times on top of that (and then usually fell bloated until lunch time)...

Whats also funny is this morning I realized the cereal I ate had almonds in it. Never had tasted them before (and I've been eating this cereal for many months)...

Yes the show on TLC does have an Infomercial feel to it (Paul even says at the beginning of the show at least once that this is NOT an infomercial, so I think he even knew it looked and felt that way). Like most things on TLC the show will be repeated numerous times this week so catch one of the repeats (or use BitTorrent to go pull down the show from mininova or someplace).

Apparently (from reading TLC's website at www.tlc.com/thin) this is a 5 part show. But as Minu mentioned just check YouTube for more videos and all. Well worth watching IMO and I'm looking forward to the other 4 episodes (I'll probably view the videos on his website in the next few days to get a jump on things though).

I'm a 44 year old guy that has dealt with weight issues pretty much all of my adult life (and even during high school when I really think back about it). I'm 356 pounds right now which makes me absolutely sick (I could never understand how anyone could be 300 pounds. then when I hit 300, I couldn't understand how anyone could be 350 pounds.).

After going to the doctor a month ago and finding out my doctor couldn't weigh me on his scale (only went to 350 pounds) I was in total shock and depressed. I've been trying to figure out what I was going to do to lose weight, but I can't afford all of the high priced, highly advertised systems out there, and not looking forward to going back to one of the many that I've tried so many times at and always failed (or done well and then put it all back on and more soon after).

So the timing for this show was perfect for me, and the 4 Golden Rules of the plan have me pumped. Not only because of how simple they are, but to be honest, I've sort of come to similar conclusions myself in watching friends of mine that are thin and have no weight problems (I know that portion control and just eating when I am hungry were major keys). Just hearing it and then getting some clarifications of why and that it can work really has me excited to try this.

Tonight I watched Paul McKenna's show on TLC called "I Can Make You Thin" and am intrigued by the concept and plan on following this show and the methods that are being taught in it.

I signed up on the www.mckenna.com site tonight and was checking out the forums, but the first thing I noticed about their site was there (currently) is no way to track your weight or anything, so I immediately thought of Traineo and decided to create a group here.

I hope others that decide to follow this plan will use this group for support. My intent is not to take away from the Paul McKenna website, but to supplement it here with the tools that Traineo offers.

I'm just an average guy, and I have nothing to do with Paul McKenna, his website, or any of his products (or TLC for that matter). Just wanting to provide something on Traineo for people to use the Traineo tools along with this system, and maybe grow a side community for it here.

WW Online website now has a "For Men" tab. I think this is more to compete with Nutrisystems where they have went directly after us guys with their ads with pro sports figures.

Granted, I don't see anything different about the WW Online for Men program (other than it mentions "Gadget reviews"), but maybe they are now realizing there is a market out there and they need to adjust some of their info.

FWIW: I've been on WW many times, but just can't bring myself to join WW right now due to this very issue. At the meetings I've been to, I'm the only man, and the discussions revolve around chocolate addiction that women seem to have, and other issues that tend to be more female oriented. I even spoke to the leader about this. She appologized, but the next meeting was still very Female-centric (IMO) and I shortly quit attending. My wife has rejoined WW last month, so I'm just using her info to start back on the program today. I'd like to have a support group, but right now, just can't bring myself to go back to WW meetings. Maybe if I see some success I'll be more motivated to officially signing up and attending meetings.
